Studio Playne team and associates

Clare leads the team, overseeing strategy, creativity and design. With over 30 years’ experience, she is adept at tackling even the most complex briefs – building brands and making the most of creative and technical possibilities across print, digital and environmental design. A recognised specialist in colour, Clare brings a unique sensitivity to how visual identity works across different media and contexts. She is also Chair and Fellow of the International Society of Typographic Designers.

Jo is the glue that keeps our studio running smoothly. With a keen eye for detail, she manages finances, tracks budgets, and ensures day-to-day operations are seamless. Organised, articulate, and adaptable, she’s known for her exceptional customer service and self-motivated approach. With over 30 years of industry experience – including roles at Go Vauxhall & TPS (VW Parts Service), and team leadership positions at Honda, Peugeot, and BMW – Jo brings proven expertise, precision, and care to everything she does.

Simon leads company growth and strengthens operational capabilities, drawing on 20+ years of director-level experience in marketing, digital, and e-commerce at top UK retailers like Sainsbury’s, Homebase, and Travis Perkins. An INSEAD and Institute of Directors alumnus, he’s also climbed Kilimanjaro for charity, co-founded a performance arts group, and produced activist documentaries.

Jim works on the strategic and consultative aspects of projects, bringing a career’s worth of experience in the creation of brands, narratives and messaging for organisations and businesses. A leading figure in the design industry for many years, Jim has a track record which includes public sector, arts and culture, placemaking, regeneration and development initiatives. He holds an MA in design writing criticism from the University of Arts London.

Cosima is a versatile conceptual designer with extensive experience working with museums, heritage organisations, and publishers. She’s particularly strong in print and exhibition design, where her eye for narrative and detail shines, but she’s equally comfortable adapting to a wide range of creative briefs. A talented illustrator with a passion for linocuts, Cosima brings a distinctive warmth and originality to her work, combining artistic craft with clear, thoughtful communication.

Steven has experience working with a diverse array of organisations, including small publishers, start-ups, large creative agencies, architectural firms, and corporate entities. Proficient across both print and digital platforms, he specialises in website design, editorial layout, and branding and identity. Steven learnt his skills in graphic design at Shillington College, London, studying part-time while working full-time as a project manager.

Kate supports the team with a strong foundation in digital imaging, Photoshop, and image manipulation. Her skillset spans layout and design with extensive print knowledge. She has worked within the design industry for 26 years specialising in merchandise design with particular proficiency in tour programme design and all tour marketing collateral. She is extremely versatile and can adapt to our fast-paced studio whether it be planning and strategy or layout and project management.

Rosie plays a vital behind-the-scenes role in managing the company’s finances, overseeing budgeting and financial reporting. Her organised, methodical approach brings clarity and consistency to our accounts, ensuring everything runs smoothly and supporting informed decision-making across the business.

Our development team embrace a variety of programming languages and frameworks, adapting seamlessly to the demands of diverse projects. Whether optimising code for performance, architecting scalable systems, or troubleshooting intricate issues, they find fulfilment in the intricate dance of logic and creativity.

Chief morale officer and four-legged genius, Giallo is a key member of the team. He is a keen advocate of the ‘walk and talk’ meeting and is always on hand to provide a warm welcome to clients and visitors.

Molly is our meet and greet specialist eager to make any guest feel at home. She also heads up the snack department, assisting in the eating of lunch and other food-based activities.
